The 2023 Pure Earth Pure Gold collection and auction is now live, featuring exquisite jewelry crafted from Fairmined gold by over 30 passionate designers committed to responsible sourcing.
I've contributed a pair of small leaf earrings made from 14K fairmined gold. Explore the collection and place your bids by clicking on this link; the auction will conclude on October 16.
Why should you bid?
Today, on Indigenous People's Day, you have the opportunity to make a difference by supporting the protection of both people and the planet. This includes numerous indigenous communities living in remote areas near gold mining sites.
Historically, mercury was extensively used in gold mining due to its ability to dissolve gold found in nature amidst sand, mud, and other nonmetallic elements like sulfur. It acted as a solution to this mining challenge, similar to how salt dissolves in water.
Unfortunately, a significant amount of the mercury used in gold and silver mining eventually entered the atmosphere or was dumped into waterways alongside other mining waste. Shockingly, it's estimated that nearly half of all mercury produced in human history was used in mining operations.
Mercury remains a highly toxic substance, posing severe environmental and health risks.
Given that a substantial portion of mercury pollution results from artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), Pure Earth's global mercury program is dedicated to reducing mercury emissions from these gold mining communities worldwide.
We can all be a part of the solution!
